🛒 Retail Jobs in Australia
Sales assistant and warehouse roles in cities.
Retail Roles
Retail work in Australia is concentrated in major cities and shopping centres.
🚨 Not Eligible for Visa Extension
Retail work does not count toward the 88 days of specified work required for a second or third year Working Holiday Visa. If you need to extend your visa, consider farm work or construction in regional areas instead.
Overview
Retail is a popular option for WHV holders with good English skills who prefer city-based work. Jobs range from sales assistant roles in shops and department stores to warehouse positions handling stock, picking, packing and dispatch. Retail work offers regular hours and a comfortable working environment, though pay is generally lower than construction or farm work.
Salary
Retail workers in Australia typically earn between $25 and $30 per hour. Penalty rates apply for evenings, weekends and public holidays under the General Retail Industry Award.
- Sales assistant: $25-28/hr base rate
- Warehouse / pick-pack: $27-32/hr
- Weekend and evening penalty rates can add 25-100% extra
Requirements
Requirements vary depending on the type of retail role:
- Sales assistant: Good English (B2 level or higher) is essential since you will be interacting with customers throughout the day. Previous retail experience is helpful but not always required.
- Warehouse: Physical fitness is important as you will be lifting, carrying and standing for long periods. A forklift licence is helpful for warehouse roles and can increase your pay rate. Many agencies provide forklift training.
